Gathering Graces 8/6/2018

*Molly’s birthday is this week, so today we started her “birthday celebration week” with a ride up the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River to hike through the Settler’s Cedar Grove.  Her husband Travis had never been there before.  When we arrived, Paul took off and ran the trail, and made it back to us, then hiked the trail with us.  This is the first time I had been through the cedar grove since fire went through the area three years ago.  I was relieved to see the fire did not damage the area too much.  I am always fascinated to see the path a fire takes.  It reminds me of cross country skiing through Yellowstone Park the winter after the big fire went through there in the summer of 1988.  You could see the trees that were scorched by the fires, but often there were green trees right next to the burned ones, because of the path of the fire.  I am so thankful the beauty of the cedar grove was not diminished by the fire.

*After our hike we drove into Murray, Idaho and had lunch at the Bedroom Gold Mine.  The Bedroom Gold Mine has an actual gold mine in the floor of the restaurant.  We all had a great lunch.

*Before leaving Murray, we drove up and visited the local cemetery.  We knew there was some connection to Mark Twain buried in that cemetery. And sure enough, we found the grave marker of Captain “Tonk” Toncrecy, who prompted Mark Twain to develop the character Huckleberry Finn.

The man who inspired Mark Twain to develop the character Huckleberry Finn.
*We arrived home, and rested for a while.  Then it was time to get into dinner mode.  We were hosting Molly’s birthday dinner tonight, with the addition of Molly and Travis and my cousin Lura Baugh Mullikin and her husband Lyle who are visiting here from Orofino.  Bill and Debbie brought us over a ham to prepare for tonight’s dinner.  We baked the ham on Sunday, and Paul sliced it up.  This evening, Paul made a glaze of some Quince jelly I had made a few years ago from the quince off the bushes in our yard.  He added some Dijon mustard to the jelly and spread it over each slice of ham, and grilled them just enough to caramelize the glaze to the meat.  It was a very delicious experiment.  We also had some grilled vegetables, potato salad, cabbage salad and bread.  Molly requested Angel Food Cake, so I found one at Yoke’s this morning, and bought some fresh blueberries and strawberries.  I whipped up some cream, and we had a special dessert for Molly’s 28th birthday.

How is it my first born is going to be 28 years old?
*As another part of her birthday week, Molly wanted to watch Infinity Wars with Travis, Paul and I.  So we enjoyed watching this movie as part of the birthday celebration.
