Rudolph and I Grew Up Together

I was born in 1963. Rudolph aired for the first time on December 4, 1964. We grew up together. I can't even count the times I have watched Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.

Sometimes I think Rudolph may have been on Monday night. If so, my Dad would have got to hog the T.V. and watch Monday Night Football. So there were years I couldn't watch it. It isn't like now, when it comes on three or four times during the Christmas season. You had one chance, and if you missed it, you missed it.

But one year was different. I have this memory, probably when I was about five or six years old, of going to one of our family friend's, the Waltman's, and watching Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer with Matthew, who was my age. I'm not sure why this was such a big deal, and why I remember it so vividly, but I did. But it seems to me that it was on a Monday night, because Dad was home watching football. (No wonderful I am so ambivalent to football, even today. It goes all the way back to missing important Christmas specials like Rudolph.)

Now we own the DVD, and can watch it every holiday season. I love the songs, and Rudolph and Clarice, and Hermie, who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, and the Abominable Snow Monster. I can sing along to each song,

Here is one of the great songs from the show, Holly, Jolly Christmas.

I was excited to get to share this wonderful show with Kimmie tonight. I think it's so cool that we get to share the same great classics that we watched as kids with our own children.

It really is a classic. I kick myself sometimes for not changing my name when I married JEJ.. then every year we could say " Have a Holley Jolley Christmas!" The other thing I remember was the commercial with the Santa riding on the Norelco shaver like a sled. It was always on during that special.

I loved all those all Christmas Shows. I grew up before we had tv, then color tv and finally channels 2 4 and 6 . I am sure you remember those dont you. I am wondering if you would like to read a couple stories I have written and see what you think about them. In return I could buy you a cup of coffee the next time youre in Spokane.

Jenny--

I would love to read some of your stories. Send them to pkrbywed@juno.com, and I'll let you know what I think. And coffee sounds great!!!

Carol that picture of you kids at Christmas is too funny as it looked just the the Kenyon household on Christmas, especially the rocking horse on the springs and the tinsel (leaded) on the tree. The norelco commercial was my favorite. Tonight at 8 on channel 7 will be an Andy Williams special with Donnie Osmond if you're interested. I loved Andy Williams Christmas shows every year and still play his Christmas music - it's a Diana Kenyon tradition I have carried on with my family.

Give our best to Paul.

IEG, CSK, and Truly--I posted the Norelco Santa commercial just for you.

Truly--Good to hear from you. Yes, you could probably find a similar picture of your family on Christmas morning. And since we lived in similar houses, it probably would look a lot alike. Oh, I love the Andy Williams Christmas specials, too, and his music. I love carrying on Christmas traditions. Keep reading this month...I'll be sharing even more Christmas memories.

MT--Yes, I have always loved Rudolph. And I can't believe you too were a David Cassidy fan. I think it went from David Cassidy, to Donny Osmond, and eventually my big heartthrob was John Travolta after he was in Saturday Night Fever and Grease.

Leahann--It is great to share the old Christmas shows with our kids. Just another way to make Christmas a special time.
